Peter Weis is an American-educated German expatriate from the football-mad city of Kaiserslautern. When US friends learned of the pronunciation of his last name, they insisted on calling him “Vice” or “Vicey”. Before too long, they also learned of more than they might have cared to about what matters most in Peter’s corner of the “Pfalz“. Football is everything to those who hail from “K-town”.
Most of Peter’s life has revolved around extolling the virtues of football — and most especially his most beloved German Bundesliga — to his stateside compatriots. For his American friends, he’s spent twenty years writing about football all over the globe on a sincerely penned passion project (Shadow Scholar Syndicate) covering 26 major tournaments and spanning well over 16,000 pages. All of it began in the LSU computer lab in the summer of 2002 when a desperate 19-year-old sought to maintain contact with his German friends from half-a-world away during the World Cup.
The “Shadow Scholar” moniker comes from Peter’s earlier life as a researcher and academic ghostwriter. The son of two university professors, he developed a habit of disappearing into subjects ranging from economics and law to linguistics and diplomacy—an obsession with research that eventually found its natural home in football journalism.
Beginning with the 2019/20 Bundesliga season, Peter transformed that lifelong passion into a full-time profession. Since then, he’s published more than 8,000 articles covering Germany’s top flight for The Runner Sports, Bulinews.com, and Get German Football News.
Now entering his eighth consecutive season as a Bundesliga correspondent, Peter continues to pursue his passion of promoting what he lovingly terms the “world’s best footballing beat“. He’s sincerely devoted to covering both the sporting and cultural side of what he considers to be the best football league on the planet.
Though he loves footballing tactics, Peter is just as likely to spend the full 90 minutes watching the German Fankurve as watching the match itself. He believes German football’s supporter culture is one of the sport’s greatest treasures and among the most distinctive traditions in world football.
Peter holds memberships in his hometown club of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, as well as SC Freiburg and FC Augsburg. He regularly travels the Bundesrepublik attending matches and has produced a host of vlogs aiming to convey the unique match-day experiences delivered by fans and ultras in all tiers of German football.
Long-form features under tight deadline constraints have characterized Peter’s work over the past seven seasons, and will once again do so during the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign. There will also be more “free-form” content from a reporter who honestly can’t stand taking himself too seriously for too long.
Peter remains keen to discuss German football whenever awake. His tendency to doze off cradling the latest copy of 11 Freunde oftentimes leads to him talking about German football whilst he’s asleep.
